Total Darkness
Total darkness, forced into the ghettos,
ghetto to live ever after
no electricity, 800 jewish families
Songs and prayers united us.
Whats going on here?
Maybe I know somebody

Hanging in the center of town was a nazi flag,
crazy memories..
"worthless jew," "juden raus," prisoners number.
forced showers, it's a trick
dead.

Hungary, Germany, Poland in ruins
Hitler was losing the war, but not against the jews
unbelieveable cruelty, hate
forced curfew, JEWISH police?
hostile shooting, will be shot on the spot
trade jewelery, as long as we live

survivors of the holocaust, totally unreal
I was 16 but I was very old,
a live skeleton, whats going on here?

Americans, americans!
Songs and prayers united us.

Rationale: I chose the title Total darkness because it was a word that seemed to symbolize the overall mood of the holocaust for me. Literally concentration camps had no lights, and all nazi's seemed to be engulfed by darkness. My poem was written to seem as a POV but also bring out some major themes in the holocaust such as hate. At the begining of the poem i used the phrase "songs and prayers united us" as saying that the jews needed hope so they prayed and sang together and at the end of the poem i used the same phrase to say that their songs and prayers were heard and brought them american troops.
